This oddity is explained in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, where Alucard explains to Maria Renard that the castle is a "creature of Chaos" that takes a new form with each rebirth it and its master go through. The castle is at least as old as Dracula is (probably much more ancient) and –being a living creature– has a new layout for each game. Another common occurrence of the castle is that it almost always crumbles (or is disassembled in another outlandish manner) upon Dracula's defeat at an enemy's hands. Said clock tower itself is usually a previous area of the castle the player must first traverse through, with Death usually acting as its guardian. Even though a fair amount of the titles that conform the franchise don't actually take place within the castle until their later stages, it is a constant presence in one way or another, nonetheless.Ī common fixture of the castle is Dracula's throne room, usually located at the tallest point of the castle and with an outside (probably magically supported) staircase leading upward and to the left, with a clock tower nearby. Dracula's Castle has been the primary setting for the entire Castlevania series.
